very young aunts/uncles?

I'm not sure if this is the right section for this, so feel free to move it or whatever.

Were any of you aunts at a very young age, or do you have an aunt or uncle that is young? DH and I have been talking a lot about having kids lately- we both really want to start trying soon. The one hangup that we've been having though is that I have several VERY young siblings (and the youngest is almost 2 so there's no gaurantee that Mom is done yet...). Basically is it fair to do that to our kid? I mean, it would not be normal to have an aunt or un le that's basically your age (or um...younger). Would that be traumatic to them or anything like that? Would they get totally ridiculed in school? Would it even make a difference if we waited a few years since they'd still be so close?

I know it sounds semi-rediculous, so I hope that you all don't think we're crazy for even considering that, but I mean how weird would it really be? Could I even allow "it" (for lack of a better work) to call them "Uncle Isaac" or whatever? Would it still be OK to call my mom grandma? Its just so weird. Or am I just crazy and overthinking things way too much?

I really wish my Mom would have listenened to me when I gave her that sex talk a few years ago...

I've always been intrigued by this issue.  I really think this is the kind of thing that is just what you personally make of it.  If you ended up having a child before your mom did, for instance, you could just not do the "aunt/uncle" label.  It would be like more of a "cousins" type situation.  If you and your hubby are ready to have a baby, I would not let this impact your decision at all.

I have a friend who was pregnant at the same time as her MIL. Her in-laws are young, and had their first at like 19 or 20. The babies are still toddlers now, and are even playmates as they live down the block from eachother. I am not sure how it will play out, but I think as long as the parents have a good attitude about it what's the difference? I think it's especially true in large families. Now I don't see my friends daughter calling MIL's son "Uncle" either as they are so close in age, and I don't think that is disrespectful in that situation.

I don't think it's a big deal, although their relationship will be different for sure. More like cousins than aunt or uncle.

But he/she will have more people to play with, which I think is great. I have tons of cousins and I loved it growing up.

Honestly, your kid probably won't even notice it's different until several years in to school and then he will probably think it's cool.

See, I thought about the whole "more like cousins" thing too. And that would be fine with the younger ones, but there are older ones too. My 16 year old sister would be heartbroken to miss out on being "aunt monica" you know? But I don't think I would be able to draw the line and be like, these two are Aunt/Uncle and these are just name....

Agreed.  I bet it would work itself out anyway and your child will decide who to call aunt/uncle and who not too.

one of my aunts is only ten years older than me (and five years older than my sister)...we have always called her "aunt"...guess i never really thought about it. i will say though, i think it is cute for a young child to be an "aunt" or "uncle"...they would probably love the idea..

thanks. that's exactly the kind of answer I was looking for. I just wanted to make sure that it wouldn't cause trauma or anything to either of them! I guess it's sounding like its more common than I thought it was, which is also somewhat ofa relief to me.

Don't worry though, I wouldn't have let that be the only thing to stop/postpone us! It was just something that had been bugging me the past few days.

my grandmother was a year older than her aunt.  When she would talk to us (grandkids) it would always be "aunt jean" but when when they would talk on the phone or in person to each other she would just call my aunt by her first name because that is how they grew up.

This is how my family is.  Even though my aunt's are much older than me I only refer to them as Aunt XX when I am talking about them to someone else.

I had a friend whose aunt was younger than her. It was kind of wierd but not a big deal. They acted more like cousins. Seriously if you are ready don't wait around on everyone else. Do what is right for you.
