how long?

ok, so this is incredibly personal, but once you started ttc how long did it take? and did you chart or just go with the flow?

we decided we're definately starting to try the end of this month (I have a big drinking weekend with the girls- going to chiago for it!- this month and we don't want this to interfere with or unintentionally cause problems with that..).

DH is pretty much convinced that the first time we... ahem..."do it" without a condom, that that's it (damn catholic school!). I'm convinced it'll take a while and am not even really expecting it to happen within the next 6 months. So I guess I'm looking for some sort of average?

We won't be charting (at least "officially"- I've been charting for months, but he doesn;t want to have any part of that and refuses to plan sex around it.)

I was off the pill for three months when we got pregnant.  But it was also the first month we charted that we got the positive pregnancy test.  After charting I found out that the first two months I think we totally had it timed wrong.  The Dr. told me that it takes most healthy couple an average of 1 year to get pregnant.  Without charting and knowing about what time to try, we may still be trying on the "wrong" days.  Afterall there's only one day a month that you can get pregnant and if everything isn't in line on that day, it's not going to happen.  The best thing to do is relax, even though I know first hand how hard that is when you want something so badly! Good Luck!

well everyone's level of fertility is different right? Also timing is a factor.

We weren't really trying to conceive when we got pregnant with Jr. This might be TMI but it actually only took one moment of careless indiscretion (i.e. we didn't use a jimmy) for us to get pregnant. I didn't think it could be possible just from that one moment but evidently the "planets" were aligned in perfect order, thus spawning the miracle of life. heh.....

So what your husband said could very well be possible.

My point..you really can't truly predict whether or not you will have a fertility problem till you start trying.

I think a good starting point would be to figure out exactly when you 'O' (I believe there are kits out there that can help you with that) and work on trying on those days. You'll probably be able to tell within a month or two if you need to do anything more..

Good luck!

I just want to offer someting from my experience. Please let your doctor know you are TTC. Make sure you are healthy, not saying you not, but there are a lot of things that don't come into play until you ARE pregnant. A little foresight, and possibly testing can take a lot of worry out of the process. Some doctors are more reactive, like you've been trying for 6 months and nothing so now they test, but being proactive IMO is the best method.

Just go see and tell them you are going to TTC. They'll do a normal check-up, probably a pap, and the doctor may even give you Prenatals to take. i'm sure they will ask your and DH's medical history and take it from there...

am I telling this to a "regular" doctor or to an ob-gyn? I was assuming "regular" but didn't know they could do paps? We just moved, so I'll be setting up new patient visits with everyone very shortly anyway.

Some GP's can do pap's, and will at least consult with you about general conception issues, but they may reffer you to and obgyn. if you are doing new patient visits anyway, I'd discuss it with both...

i thought it would take us longer than it did. i can usually tell when i am ovulating, and i got pregnant the second month. we didn't do any charting or anything like that.

i definitely recommend seeing a doctor before TTC. while we are fortunate that everything is ok with lilah, i kind of wish we had testing/etc done before i got pregnant just because of some genetic issues i have.

I met with the OBGYN that I planned to see during the pregnancy.  She was very helpful, did a pap, checked everything out, went over my history a little and DH's history and then gave me some info on when to try, etc. to increase my chances.  I'm glad I did!

It really only took us 2 weeks from when I started charting. By using this method, I was able to see when I was ovulating and made sure to have sex at the right time and pow..first try and I am pregnant. Now I am just hoping it sticks.

So, I guess my point is is can take the first try or it could take months. So, just go at your own pace.

Well everyone is different, I seem to be the exception here!

When hubby & I got married we decided to do the "if it happens it happens if it doesn't - ok."  Well, after a year it didn't happen.  So I went to an infertility class & he got his swimmer's tested.  He was fine - so we charted for a year - I thought I was going to go crazy.  I was scheduled for an HSG, and chicken'd out.  Who would have thought making a baby could stress you out SO much!  It didn't help that all I kept hearing from my mom & sister (they didn't know we were trying) was to be careful!  All they had to do was "walk by" and they ended up pg.

So, I had a fit and told my hubby I was giving it all up.  I was too sad and tired of being let down every month.  I didn't want to try anymore.  Well, seriosly, not 3 weeks later I was pregnant!  That's when I conceived, not when I found out - so I was still upset for a bit

That's life for you.

with my son i got pregnant right away — like the first time we tried. which was lucky, i suppose. about 10 months ago my husband and i finally decided that we were ready to have another baby and it's been a long, frustrating 10 months. needless to say, i'm still not pregnant. SO it's not just that every woman is different... every woman might be different at different stages in her life too. seeing your doctor is the right first step though and finding an OBGYN that you like and feel comfortable with is really, REALLY important.

good luck to you, ilovechoo!

i started charting in january.  we have been trying since march 2005, i got pregnant in august 2005, m/c in october 2005  started trying again in november 2005, and still no luck.  so i started charting and my cycles got longer and longer, so i went to the doctor to get checked out about a month ago, and found out that i don't ovulate, so i have stopped charting and i have started taking vitex, folic acid, calcium, prenatals, vitamin c, and evening primrose oil.  i will start charting again in a month or two, and give all this time to work it's way into my system, and see if my cycles get any shorter.  right now they are about 60 days long.

with my daughter, that was a whole other story, i was on bcp, using condoms and the withdrawl method, and had sex litterally 3 times that whole cycle, and got pregnant.   crazy huh.

tashina — how did your dr. determine that you weren't ovulating? from your charts? i have a sneaking suspicion that i'm not ovulating every month and my dr. suggested an ovulation predictor kit (i told her charting makes me crazy and i needed a different method). is the vitex what will make you start ovulating again? my dr. mentioned clomid, but that freaked me out so i told her i'd try the OPK first. just curious.

how old is your daughter?
