Crib mobiles question

Are these actually useful or are they more for decoration?  Is a crib toy better?  The mobile that I'm looking at is really neutral cause it would look good with the bedding, etc, but I'm wondering if it'll be too boring for the baby.  Is the music at least helpful?

Oh, and my brother got me this for Christmas, so would this take place of the mobile?

And this is one of the mobiles I'm considering:
Musical Mobile - Our Lamb by Small Fry Design
(I promise I'm not doing a sheep/lamb theme, it just so happens that two people have gotten me sheep baby gifts, I guess they're good gender neutral gifts, so I figured the sheep mobile would go well with it all)
ETA:
I also thought these mobiles were cute, would one of them be better?

Remember, I'm doing blue/brown polka dot bedding and striped walls.  Thanks!

For the majority I think they're more for decoration and completes the look of the nursery.  The 1st 2 months or so DD slept in her bassinet in our room because she woke up frequently for nighttime feedings, so we hardly used the crib, much less the mobile.

I bought a mobile that matched the nursery and it also wasnt very colorful.  However, once she got older and her vision sharpened she was able to see it move and listen to the music while she reached for the dolls and gooed at them.  Other than dressing her and sleeping, she didnt spend that much playtime in her crib.  You'll spend a lot of mommy and me playtime on the floor, living room, kitchen, etc.

BTW, the toy your brother gave you is really cute and I like that it safely attaches to the crib.

i think mobiles are cute, but i couldn't find one to fit our crib. (the rails are rounded in shape and have wide tops)

i think you are supposed to take them out of the crib after 5-6 months, though.

I got this mobile

and Jola really loves it..

she is very curious and likes to stare at things for a long periods of time...
I hung it on the ceiling over her bed but she is also able to see it from her changing table...that part has been very useful because it keeps her occupied while I'm trying to change her diaper (the lil stinker hates diaper changes )
I say go with something colorful...there are so many things I wish I would have done that with...instead of trying to buy things that are decor friendly...

just my 2 cents..
